'The 25th Hour' Collection
The name of the collection is 'The 25th Hour'. a day will have 24 hours, and 'The 25th hour' is a representation of the imaginary world outside of the actual hours in a day. As I'm imagining what would happen if I escaped the Earth and Covid and went to live on another planet. There are three series in this graduation exhibition, from heavy to light jewellery, representing reality to imagination.
The whole exhibition was inspired by the bicycle and the moon and my own imagination. Back in lockdown time in the summer of 2020. Due to the restriction rules caused by the pandemic, such as going out less, avoiding the crowds, not seeing friends, etc. have seriously affected my mental health and living habits. My eagerness to get out of the house has triggered my imagination about what it's like to go outside. So, I began to imagine what would happen if we escaped from Earth and went to live on another planet. Thus, creating a wonderful utopian world without Covid in my fantasy. Back to reality, I also started to question myself about what is the safest and the best transport for me to travel around? When is the safest time to go outside? So, in the 2020 summer holiday, I retaught myself how to ride a bike again in the outdoor parking space which is near my house, when the sun goes down (because it's less crowded). By the time I returned to Edinburgh for my 3rd year, I had the habit of going up CaltonHill (a hill in Edinburgh) or walking around Edinburgh at sunset when it was dark. Once, on a random night trip, I began to have a new habit of observing the changing shape of the moon every time I went out. It was a strange situation in my life, therefore, I wish to document it in a jewellery collection form, by combining the elements of the bicycle and the moon to create a series of jewels to commemorate my reality and fantasy world at the time.
This collection will include rings, earrings and brooches. All jewellery construction for this collection was inspired by the bicycle structure and the moon phase movement. They both contain a circle, spinning, and kinetic movement element. The bicycle structure also leads me to use cold connection techniques. For example, wheels and adjustable seats and pedals. Most of the joint for all jewellery will be done by riveting and screws.
The collection is made using mother of pearl in white, black, and blue, titanium in blue, silver, brass, 9ct yellow and white gold (materials in the colour of yellow/gold, white/silver, and blue and black).Because the moon's surface and the sky's surface have many kinds of colours, also I like to use different materials and colours to create a visual effect. In selecting the materials, I referred to the moon colours during the day and night and the moonlight colours reflected on the clouds that I could see with the naked eye. Although there are more colors that can be seen through a telescope, I feel that the colors seen by the naked eye can better suggest the fantasy of escaping to the moon while I am imagining inside the room. I used mother of pearl in white, black, and blue as I found that mother of pearl can have an iridescent colour through light reflection, like the colour of the moonlight reflecting on the clouds. Blue titanium represents the color of the moon and the sky; it turns into many uniform colors evenly through anodizing titanium with electrical current. Silver, brass, and 9ct white and yellow gold represent moonlight.
